During our stay in Vancouver, we took the SeaBus (ferry) over to North Vancouver to check out the markets. On our way out of the terminal, we noticed this small coffee shop, but didn’t recognize the name – The Coffee Bun. Now you may have guessed from my Grub Hub pages, that I’m an advocate for independent restaurants and cafés. So we decided to check it out, and we were not disappointed.
The shop itself is quite small, probably enough seating for 10 people. The smell of fresh coffee filled your nostrils as soon as you open the door. The staff there were super friendly and didn’t mind us taking some photos of their display, which was build into the counter and filled with over 10 types of coffee bun.
We asked for a recommendation, and were advised the most popular buns were the Original, Green Tea and Vanilla Bean Custard. We decided on the latter, and it went great with the coffee. The cake itself was spongey inside, with an undertone of coffee. The bun had a light crust, which prevented the cake from falling apart when you chomp down, not too dissimilar from a doughnut. There was a generous helping of custard/cream at the centre, which oozed into the pores of the bun when you bit down. If we’d been in Vancouver longer, we would have definitely returned to try some of the other flavours.
At $3-4 it’s not the cheapest cake you could buy, but well worth paying the extra to help support local business.
